North Oil Company (NOC) has awarded a contract to McDermott International for the development of Qatar’s largest offshore oil field, Ruya project.

The contract, which follows the completion of the pre-FEED contract, is for front-end engineering design (FEED) for the project, which was previously referred to as Al-Shaheen Phase 3-Batch 1.

McDermott Offshore Middle East senior vice president Tareq Kawash said: “This is a strategic contract for our offshore business in Qatar and a game-changer for McDermott as it represents the largest offshore FEED we have ever received in the Middle East.

“As was the case for the Pre-FEED with NOC, work will be led from our highly skilled Doha operating center and will be supported by our Chennai engineering office.”

Under the contract, McDermott will be responsible for FEED studies and deliverables suitable for an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) project.

The scope of the contract includes providing EPCIC schedule and cost estimates, creating technical output data (FEED data), and developing plan for an early work for the brownfield scope with necessary site surveys.

Furthermore, McDermott will ensure that design and brownfield modifications of the new greenfield facilities comply with applicable rules and regulations.

McDermott Qatar country manager and vice president operations Neil Gunnion said: “The award strengthens our successful collaboration with NOC and demonstrates the continuity of our business relationship with them.

“Utilising our comprehensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the offshore sector in Qatar, we look forward to continuing to work closely with NOC to contribute to the development of Shaheen, which is Qatar’s largest offshore oil field.”

McDermott plans to manage the Ruya Project work from its Doha office with support from engineering office in Chennai, India.

Located in Qatari waters 80km north of Ras Laffan, Al-Shaheen oil field comprises 33 platforms and more than 300 wells.

Earlier this year, McDermott Middle East was awarded engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract by QatarEnergy for offshore facilities and pipelines related to the North Field expansion project.
