Software developer Vissim has secured a contract from Repsol Norge to enhance oil spill detection capabilities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

Under the contract, Vissim will install a new radar-based solution on the Inspirer jack-up rig in the Yme oil field.

The field is located in the central North Sea, approximately 160km north-east of the Ekofisk field.

The upgraded system by Vissim features advanced image processing technology, significantly improving sensitivity to detect smaller oil spills.

It incorporates machine learning to accurately classify detected phenomena, reducing the incidence of false alarms, a common issue with traditional radar-based oil spill detection systems.

Operators are mandated by regulatory requirements to have oil spill monitoring and detection technologies that operate independently of weather conditions.

Vissim’s two-in-one solution facilitates both vessel tracking and oil spill detection using a single radar system.

Vissim North Sea operations director Håvard Odden said: “Repsol has utilised Vissim’s systems for many years. We have first-hand witnessed the company’s dedication to not only comply with rules and regulations but also push for improved environmental monitoring solutions. This latest contract is proof of the latter.”

Last year, Norwegian oil and gas company Vår Energi selected Vissim to implement upgraded oil spill detection technology at its assets on the NCS.

Vissim noted that its cloud-based, upgraded oil spill detection solution is designed to comply with the highest IT security standards.

Vissim is responsible for the installation of new and upgraded oil spill detection solutions at Vår Energi’s operations including the Balder production, storage and offloading vessel and the Ringhorne processing platform.
