Tubing solutions provider Vallourec has secured contracts for the supply of products and services to the Brazilian national oil company, Petrobras.

The three-year long-term agreements (LTA) will see Vallourec deliver premium, seamless oil country tubular goods (OCTG) products and associated accessories to Petrobras’ operations, including premium steel grades and connections that make use of upgraded technology.

The company is also set to offer a variety of specialised services as part of the deal.

“The three-year long-term agreements (LTA) will see Vallourec deliver premium, seamless oil country tubular goods (OCTG) products and associated accessories to Petrobras’ operations.”

Petrobas is expected to use the products and related services across its offshore oil and gas exploration and production wells, which are situated at the reservoirs of the pre-salt basin.

Production from the pre-salt area currently represents more than 50% of Petrobras total output.

Vallourec will able to bolster its position in OCTG products for the oil and gas industry via the latest contracts.

Vallourec’s management board chairman Philippe Crouzet said: “Petrobras is one of the most productive oil companies in the world and operates in pre-salt areas where the potential is huge.

“We are proud to have taken up the challenge once again, to answer the technological challenges of Petrobras.

“We are pleased to pursue our collaboration with this historical partner.

“We have been bold in supporting it with the best of our innovation and by proposing new services.”

The pre-salt fields in Brazil are noted to pose several challenges. In addition to the salt layer itself, the wells feature depths of up to 7,000m with ultra-deepwater conditions up to 2,000m between the surface and seabed.

The areas also experience acid corrosion caused by hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) contaminants, while high-pressure / high-temperature conditions are also experienced in some locations.

Linking all these parameters together has an important impact on the exploration process, as OCTG products are required to withstand a combination of mechanical, corrosive and thermal constraints to operate effectively.

Vallourec will supply Petrobras with advanced seamless pipes for sour service using high-alloyed material under the latest arrangement, as well as the latest advanced premium connections.
