US natural gas company Williams has commenced construction on the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project, an expansion of its existing Transco pipeline network.

The NESE project will increase the Transco system’s daily capacity by 400,000 dekatherms, enough to meet the energy needs of approximately 2.3 million homes across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

Williams confirmed that it has obtained all necessary federal and state permits to begin work and is aiming for the project to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Williams president and CEO Chad Zamarin said: “Energy security is national security, and energy affordability drives American prosperity. NESE delivers reliable American energy to New York’s grid at a critical time.

“By adding new capacity to bring domestically produced natural gas to the grid, we are providing dependable energy for countless homes and businesses at the time they need it most.”

According to Williams, the additional capacity will allow the system to supply more natural gas during peak winter use, helping energy providers meet customer demand, maintain operations for businesses and keep infrastructure operational.

Independent analysis cited by the company suggests the NESE project could moderate electricity costs over time by improving the flexibility and fuel supply for the grid.

Williams expects the construction and operation of the expansion to support thousands of jobs and contribute significant economic value to local and regional economies.

The company reports the ongoing use of advanced safety protocols including monitoring, inspection and automation technologies in the design, construction and operation of its pipeline infrastructure.

Williams also stated that the NESE project will contribute towards environmental objectives by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 13,000t.

The project is expected to utilise updated materials and electric motor-driven compressors to reduce emissions and noise compared to older systems.

In April 2025, Williams commissioned two Transco pipeline expansion projects, the Southeast Energy Connector and the Texas to Louisiana Energy Pathway, to meet growing energy demand in the south-eastern US.
