Abundant feedstock drives polypropylene capacity additions in the Middle East

The region will add 8.56mtpa of polypropylene production capacity between 2025 and 2030 from 22 upcoming projects.

GlobalData Energy October 31 2025

The Middle East is a key region for global polypropylene capacity additions due to its abundant and low-cost natural gas feedstock, and strong demand from growing end-use sectors such as construction and automotive. This significant feedstock advantage has allowed the region to expand its polypropylene capacity by 2030, next only to Asia.

The region is anticipated to add a polypropylene production capacity of 8.56 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2025 and 2030 from 22 upcoming projects, 16 of which are being planned in Iran. The country alone is projected to add a capacity of 5.63mtpa during the outlook period.

The highest capacity addition in the region is expected from a project in Türkiye from Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik polypropylene plant 1. The project is located in Adana province and is expected to commence operations in 2029 with a capacity of 1mtpa. Sasa Polyester Sanayi AS is the designated operator of this project and holds a 100% equity stake.

In Iran, Bushehr is set to emerge as the key province adding major capacity additions during the projected period. Some of the key projects anticipated to start operations are Jam Polypropylene Company Assaluyeh polypropylene plant 2 (0.60mtpa) and Pars Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh polypropylene plant 2 (0.5mtpa). Both are located in the city of Assaluyeh and are expected to come online in 2028 and 2026 respectively.

The Alujain National Industrial Yanbu polypropylene plant in Saudi Arabia, and the BY Polimer Sanayi ve Ticaret Erzin polypropylene plant 2 in Türkiye are other key projects in the region and have capacities of 0.6mtpa and 0.45mtpa respectively. They are expected to come onstream in 2029 and 2030, in the same order. Further details of global polypropylene capacity and CapEx analysis can be found in GlobalData’s new report, 'Polypropylene Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of Active and Planned Plants to 2030'.
