Petrom has made a significant onshore gas discovery at exploration well 4539 Totea, which is located in the Oltenia region of south-west Romania.

The firm drilled the well to a depth of 3,600m and targeted a potentially large, high-pressure accumulation.

During the well testing, a maximum stabilised flow rate of 3,100boed of gas and associated condensate was recorded from a single zone.

Petrom will start an appraisal programme to determine the size of the accumulation, which is located in an area with high geological complexity.

Petrom executive board member Johann Pleininger said the discovery might represent the most important onshore gas discovery in Romania of the last six years.
