BP has unveiled a new $11m laboratory complex equipped with fuel testing facilities at the Kwinana refinery near Perth in Australia.
The $50m G10 project, which was completed in mid-2011, will allow the company to increase its production of low-sulphur diesel.
BP’s new lab features a $2.5m air handling system, which includes fume protection cupboards and a separate analyser workshop.
It also includes a chemical store and an Australian Standard safety system, including safety showers and fire and gas detection.
BP Australia Kwinana refinery managing director Des Gillen said: "While we continue to face a very tough business climate, we believe we can build a successful business. It’s not going to be easy and it will require a relentless focus on delivering best in class in performance in every area of the business."
Gary Gray, Australia special minister of state, said upon opening the new laboratory: "It is the biggest refinery in Australia and this impressive laboratory is an investment not only in the science of manufacturing high quality fuels, but it is also a symbol of the ongoing investment in the refinery’s and the region’s future."
