Asia is poised to dominate the global polyethylene capacity additions by 2030 to satisfy surging domestic demand across packaging, automotive, and construction sectors. Moreover, Asia’s massive industrial base relies heavily on polyethylene for everyday consumer products and heavy-duty industrial applications.

Asia’s dominance in the global polyethylene capacity growth is majorly supported by the upcoming projects in China and India. Of the two countries, China leads the region, with far more upcoming projects than any other country. The highest capacity addition in the country is expected to be added from the “Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Polyethylene Plant 7 (Swing)”. Zhejiang Petrochemical Co Ltd is developing this project in the Daishan city. It is likely to come onstream in 2028.

The “Fujian Sinopec Aramco Refining and Petrochemical Zhangzhou Polyethylene Plant 2” and the “Tangshan Xu Yang Petrochemical Tangshan Polyethylene Plant 1” represent some of the other key projects in China. Both projects are anticipated to commence operations in 2030.

Capacity additions in India, on the other hand, are expected to come from a smaller number of projects than in China. The largest capacity addition in the country is anticipated from the planned “Bharat Petroleum Corporation Bina Polyethylene Plant (Swing)” project. Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd is the designated operator of the project and holds a 100% equity stake. Polyethylene production is expected to start in 2028.

Indonesia, South Korea, and Brunei are expected to be the other Asian countries to see capacity additions during the outlook period. Indonesia is likely to add capacity from four upcoming projects by 2030. In South Korea, S-Oil Corporation Inc is planning three projects, while in Brunei, Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd is developing two projects.
