Asia’s refinery coking unit capacity increased from 3,430mbd in 2017 to 3,560mbd in 2022 at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 0.7%. It is expected to increase from 3,560mbd in 2022 to 4,440mbd in 2027 at an AAGR of 4.4%. China, India, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines are the key countries in Asia that accounted for 97% of the total coking unit capacity of the region in 2022.

China had the highest refinery coking unit capacity in Asia in 2022 with 2,121mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery coking unit capacity were India (1,052mbd), Japan (110mbd), South Korea (110mbd) and the Philippines (45mbd). China accounted for about 60% of the total Asia’s coking capacity in 2022 while South Korea witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2017-2022 with an AAGR of 2.6%.

In Asia, 10 countries had active refineries with a total coking unit capacity of 3,560mbd in 2022. Jamnagar I (India), Jamnagar II (India), Vadinar (India), Dayushan Island (China) and Fushun (China) were some of the largest active refineries in terms of coking unit capacity in 2022.

By 2027, 10 refineries are expected to witness the start of operations of upcoming coking unit projects across Asia. Vadinar (India), Hambantota III (Sri Lanka) and Khalifa (Pakistan) are the major refineries with such projects in Asia during the 2023-2027 outlook period.
