GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Crude Oil Refinery Maintenance Review, 2020 – Asia and North America Witness the Highest Maintenance in 2020’ indicates that in the year 2020, among all regions globally, Asia had the highest refining capacity under maintenance (both planned and unplanned) with 11,524 thousand barrels per day (mbd). North America closed followed with 11,183 mbd.

Asia had the highest refining capacity of 11,319 mbd under planned maintenance in 2020. North America and Europe followed with 7,427 mbd and 5,358 mbd respectively. In terms of unplanned maintenance for 2020, North America had the highest refining capacity of 5,520 mbd under maintenance, followed by South America and Asia with 577 mbd and 205 mbd, respectively.

In terms of refining capacity under planned maintenance, the US, South Korea, and China again led globally among countries with 6,227 mbd, 2,740 mbd, and 2,719 mbd, respectively. In terms of refining capacity under unplanned maintenance, the US (5,190 mbd), Venezuela (338 mbd), and Mexico (330 mbd) were the top three countries globally.

Among refineries in 2020, Ulsan refinery in South Korea, Ruwais in the United Arab Emirates, and Yeosu in South Korea were the top three refineries in terms of refining capacity under maintenance (both planned and unplanned) with 840 mbd, 837 mbd, and 800 mbd, respectively.

The Ulsan and Yeosu refineries in South Korea also led in terms of planned maintenance globally, while Port Arthur II (635 mbd) had the highest unplanned maintenance. Port Arthur II, Baton Rouge (518 mbd), and Lake Charles I (425 mbd), all located in the US, had the highest unplanned maintenance in 2020.
