Skellefteå, 11 May, 2006 - A completely new 'standard build’ explosion protected lift is introduced by Alimak specifically for offshore and petrochemical related applications in hazardous areas.

The new ALIMAK SE-Ex range complies with ATEX (Europe) and NEC (USA) regulations - offering protection in Zone 1 or 2, Gas group IIA or IIB and Temperature class T1-T4 and Class 1 Division 2, Gas group C or D, Temperature class T1-T4 respectively.

The new range offers capacities of between 400 and 1,600 kg and has direct-on-line motor control. The ALIMAK SE-Ex is available in 15 car sizes ranging between 0.91 m x 1.3 m and 1.56 m x 2.21 m. It travels at speeds of 0.4-0.6 m/s.

For the first time the Ex range features standard build components built to the same quality standards as the ALIMAK SE range but re-engineered to meet the uniquely challenging demands of the offshore and petrochemical industries. The ALIMAK SE-Ex range enables safer transportation of workers and materials in potentially hazardous areas.

It also features a proven rack and pinion build as used in numerous platform structures, outside platform modules, derrick towers and hull structures, etc. since 1974; eliminating movement in potentially hazardous stairways and ladderways to provide convenient access to, for example, pump and machine rooms.

Lift build

Made of extruded aluminium, and hot dip galvanised steel, the ALIMAK SE-Ex lift car maximises operator comfort without compromising operating reliability and ability to handle the toughest working environments. The car door can be sited on any of the three sides of the car away from the mast and is mechanically and electrically interlocked. Electric cabinets and landing control boxes are fabricated in stainless steel. Stainless steel car walls, doors and other key components are also available for extremely aggressive environments.

Operation

The ALIMAK SE-Ex is equipped with ALC-II, a new collective control system, encompassing a built-in fault indication programme, that ensures excellent stopping accuracy and the ease of use. The ALC-II system can be provided with a wide range of optional features such as Auto return, Auto alarm and Fire and gas alarm.

The lift is push button operated from the car. The controls are logically positioned on a panel in the car.

Safety features

ALIMAK SE-Ex incorporates all the safety features normally associated with the Alimak lift range.

The unique progressive Alimak safety device comes into operation should the lift exceed the rated speed, bringing the car to a smooth stop and the power to the drive motor is cut off. The machinery plate is constructed to ensure that the pinion of the safety device always remains in engagement with the rack. Safety hooks located beneath the lowest drive pinion make sure the car cannot climb over the top of the mast. Limit switches are provided at top and ground levels and there is an ultimate limit switch in case of overrun. Another example of the broad spectrum of Alimak safety features is the phase failure relay that protects the electrical system.

The lift is normally equipped with a centrifugal brake, located between the motor and the gearbox, that allows passengers to be lowered to the landing below in the event of a power failure.

Retrofits

ALIMAK SE-Ex can easily be installed on existing oil rigs undergoing upgrades or retrofitted in other hazardous industrial environments.

Rack & pinion delivers unique advantages

The Alimak lift carries its own machinery on top of the car, eliminating the need for a separate machine room. Moreover, the lift can be installed without a load-bearing shaft, as the guide mast transfers the vertical loads to the foundation.

ALIMAK SE-Ex - main characteristics

  • Modular design – Wide range of car sizes and capacities
  • Drive machinery located on the car (no costly machine room required)
  • Fully collective lift control system
  • Durable materials: extruded aluminium car wall panels with car support frame and mast sections of hot dip galvanised steel. Most electric cabinets and landing control boxes are stainless steel (a few cabinets are made of saltwater-proof aluminium)
  • Wide range of optional equipment and functions.
