Tideland Signal has supplied Saipem with a comprehensive package of Syncrolan warning systems for its Scarabeo 8 semi-submersible drilling rig destined for deployment in the Goliat field off northern Norway, the world’s most northerly oil field.

The warning systems comprise two Syncrolan light stations, two subsidiary lights, a Syncrolan fog station and a central control/monitor panel. Tideland’s Syncrolan light stations combine an ML-300-SL-400-EX main light and FLMC-4 multicode flasher fitted with 400W dual filament lamps to achieve a range of 15Nm. The ML-300 secondary lights have a range of 10Nm and are equipped with TF-3B MicroPower Omnibus II automatic six-place lampchanger.

The light stations are wired to a back-up battery system, capable of powering the warning systems for 96 hours in the event of a mains power failure. In this particular installation the fog signal is an AB-560 fog array with a side-mounted ECU 645 control unit to limit the overall height of the installation. Tideland’s AB-560 fog signal incorporates five drivers/emitters producing 133.2dB at 1m equivalent and broadcasting a 360° sound beam in the horizontal plane. The drivers/emitters are housed in robust GRP casings and are mounted in a galvanised steel structure designed to withstand severe storms.

Operating at less than 25% of rated capacity results in exceptional efficiency and life expectancy. There are also two subsidiary Tideland ML-155 beacons fitted with TF-3B MicroPower Omnibus II and showing a red light. Tideland’s AB-560 fog signal incorporates five drivers / emitters producing 133.2dB at 1m equivalent and broadcasting a 360° sound beam in the horizontal plane.
