Mooring System Inspection Philosophy

By Welaptega Marine

Permanently installed, long term moorings have been used in the offshore industry for a relatively short period of time when compared against their history of usage with mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs).

The relative failure rates between MODUs and FPSs are however comparable. For a Floating Production System the moorings are deployed underwater for years at a time; typically 20 years with little or no opportunity to view their condition in air.

It is now widely accepted that individual mooring lines fail more frequently than designed for. To date, more than 60% of UK based FPS Facilities have suffered at least one mooring line failure (Nobel Denton).

This paper will describe the nature of the issue of lifetime integrity in the context of mooring systems along with business drivers, inspection methodology and available inspection technologies.
