California witnessed an increase of 1.88% in total oil and gas production to 487,088.27 boe/d in August 2021 when compared with the previous month, according to GlobalData’s USL48 database.

The oil and gas production declined 2.65% in August 2021 from 500,347.28 boe/d in August 2020. On a YTD basis, the total oil and gas production in 2021 increased by 0.12% from the same period in 2020.

In August 2021, oil production declined 0.21% to 359,556.25 bd as against the previous month, while gas production up by 8.27% to 739.69 mmcf/d.

On a YTD basis, oil production decreased by 3.55% in 2021 when compared with the same period in 2020, while gas production rose by 11.38%. Out of the total oil and gas production in August 2021, oil held a 73.82% share, while gas had a 26.18% share.


In California, California Resources emerged as the largest oil and gas producer, recording a total oil and gas production at 110,513.23 boe/d in August 2021, an increase of 42.8% from the previous month. The company held an 18.04% share in oil production and 35.8% share in gas production in August 2021.

On a YTD basis, the company registered a 16.18% decrease in total oil and gas production from the same period in 2020.



Compared with other counties in California, Kern county recorded the highest oil and gas production, holding a 62.67% share in August 2021. The county witnessed a 12.28% increase in production to 305,246.46 boe/d in August 2021 when compared with the previous month.

On a YTD basis, Kern registered a decline of 6.89% in total production from the same period in 2020.
