The US oil and gas industry trade association American Petroleum Institute (API) has published an updated version of a standard for offshore industry.
The latest standard is aimed at improving the oil and gas industry’s commitment to worker safety, and environmental protection in offshore operations.
API’s Recommended Practice 75 (RP 75) provides guidance for implementing, maintaining, and improving a safety and environmental management system (SEMS) for deep water operations. It is a performance-based document which enables the oil and gas companies to provide a systematic methodology to identify and manage operational risks and enhance workers safety.
API Global Industry Services senior vice-president Debra Phillips said: “Producing oil and gas safely while protecting our environment is a top priority for API and its members.
“API continuously updates its standards to reflect new technologies, techniques, and in-field learning. This latest edition of RP 75 reflects state-of-the-art systems to drive safety and environmental protection in offshore operations.”
The revision made in the new edition includes extending the standard for global use, which earlier focussed only on domestic operations in the US outer continental shelf (OCS).

By GlobalDataProviding guidance on how companies should interface with each other to ensure operational risk management and expanding the types of operations that fall under SEMS risk management expectations are also included in the guidance. It also includes advancements in technology, operations, and overall knowledge, as well as structured standard to encourage utilisation by contractors and sub-contractors.
According to API, RP 75 has a long history of promoting safety and environmental protection at offshore assets. It also served as foundation for the Center for Offshore Safety (COS). This centre works with the offshore industry on the implementation of both RP 75 and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s SEMS requirements.
