Baker Hughes has successfully completed a string test of a mixed refrigerant compression system of the Calcasieu Pass liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Louisiana, US.
The Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility is located in Cameron Parish and is being developed by Venture Global LNG subsidiary Venture Global Calcasieu Pass.
According to Venture Global, the string test carried out at Baker Hughes’ testing facility in Massa, Italy, proves the functional and performance-based capabilities of the Calcasieu Pass process system nearly seven months after the project’s final investment decision (FID).
The ten million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) Calcasieu Pass LNG project deploys a process solution from Baker Hughes that utilises mid-scale, modular liquefaction trains. These LNG trains are factory-fabricated in Italy.
Last August, Venture Global awarded a contract to Baker Hughes to provide this comprehensive LNG technology solution for the Calcasieu Pass project.
In the wake of limiting conditions imposed by the US Government due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Baker Hughes and Venture Global used new virtual technology to conduct the string test.

By GlobalDataVenture Global said in a press statement: “As part of the ongoing execution of the project, the string test was performed on the first full set of equipment to prove that all system components function together under normal operating conditions.
“The string test replicates and simulates site conditions, and every component that will be shipped to and operated at site is commissioned and validated in order to verify whole system functionality and performance.
“The test performs a mechanical running assessment and measures equipment vibration and bearing temperatures at full speed and full load.”
In July last year, Calcasieu Pass LNG construction financing received more than $10bn in binding commitments from initial coordinating lead arrangers.
