UK-based exploration and production firm SDX Energy has confirmed a gas discovery at its SAH-2 well on the Sebou permit, Morocco.

The discovery comes after the well was spudded to a total depth of 1,304m. It encountered 5.2m of net conventional natural gas pay across two zones in the Guebbas and Hoot formations. The average porosity in the pay section was identified to be 33%.

The well was said to be on prognosis although the reservoir thickness exceeded pre-drill expectations.

“This was also the first well in the Gharb basin that was successfully drilled using downhole directional tools.”

SDX Energy president and CEO Paul Welch said: “We are very pleased to be able to announce another discovery, the fifth of seven wells drilled to date in our nine-well Moroccan campaign.

“This was also the first well in the Gharb basin that was successfully drilled using downhole directional tools which allowed us to penetrate the crest of two individual targets with a single well-bore.”

The company intends to use the same tools to drill the LNB-1 well, which is an exploration well in the Lalla Mimouna concession.

Welch added: “By successfully targeting the crests of specific horizons, we now have the ability to improve the recovery efficiency from individual wells.”

Having made the discovery, SDX is set to complete, test and connect the well to existing infrastructures. A further update regarding the well’s testing results is scheduled to be provided next month.

The company has a 75% working interest in the Sebou concession, which is located in the Gharb Basin.
