TotalEnergies has entered into a three-year partnership with French AI company Mistral to develop AI models for oil and gas reservoir exploration and engineering.
The joint programme involves an investment of more than €100m to improve the ability to integrate, process and interpret large volumes of geoscientific data.

The collaboration will combine TotalEnergies’ expertise in subsurface geoscience and reservoir engineering with Mistral’s technological and scientific resources.
The goal is to create AI models that generate multiple development scenarios for exploration opportunities, as well as optimise or extend the life of existing projects.
TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said: “Exploration and reservoir engineering are among the areas where artificial intelligence can create the greatest value for our activities.
“By combining a century of geoscience data, the expertise of our teams and Mistral’s capabilities, we aim to develop a new generation of tools capable of supporting our experts in analysing the most complex data and in their decision-making.
“This partnership also illustrates our commitment to contributing to the development of a high-performing European digital ecosystem, supporting our competitiveness.”
The companies plan to use next-generation AI techniques including agentic AI to work with up to ten petaflops of data, alongside nearly a century of TotalEnergies’ accumulated geoscience knowledge.
TotalEnergies and Mistral plan to set up a shared scientific laboratory that will bring together the experience of TotalEnergies’ subsurface specialists with Mistral’s scientific and technical skills.
According to the oil major, the collaboration supports its efforts to create proprietary AI models within a European digital ecosystem, while allowing Mistral to develop its presence in the European market.

Earlier this month, TotalEnergies completed an asset swap with Galp following an agreement reached in December 2025.
Under the terms, TotalEnergies acquired a 40% operated interest in the PEL83 licence, which includes the Mopane discovery, from Galp.
In return, Galp received a 10% participating interest in the PEL56 licence, covering the Venus discovery, and a 9.39% participating interest in the PEL91 licence.
