Global ammonia capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the five years from 2023 to 2028, potentially increasing from 238.26 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2022 to 311.02 mtpa in 2030, a total growth of 30.5%. 114 planned and announced ammonia projects are expected to come online, predominantly in North America, followed by the former Soviet Union (FSU) over the upcoming years.

North America is expected to add a capacity of 26.39 mtpa from 18 new build planned and announced projects. With regard to the expansion of existing ammonia projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.14 mtpa from one announced project.

The main capacity addition will be from an announced project, the Ascension Clean Energy Donaldsonville ammonia plant, with a capacity of 7.20 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2027.

The FSU follows next with a capacity of 13.11 mtpa from 16 new-build planned projects.
