Kuwait’s Supreme Petroleum Council has given approval for the construction of the 615,000bpd Al-Zour refinery in Kuwait.
The refinery will be developed in two phases, processing about 300,000bpd of crude oil under the first phase and a further 315,000bpd of oil in the second phase.
Under phase II, the distillation input of the 200,000bpd Shuaiba facility will be replaced, and there are plans for its closure, reports Oil & Gas Journal.
In March 2009, Kuwaiti authorities suspended the Al-Zour refinery project after lawmakers said the government had bypassed the law in awarding contracts to foreign firms without first consulting Parliament’s central tenders committee.
