Global Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 12.12mtpa in 2021 to 15.40mtpa in 2026, registering total growth of 79%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) Industry Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’ states that Asia leads with the largest capacity additions for the newbuild and expansion of the existing ABS projects by 2026.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 2.34mtpa from six newbuild planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.19mtpa from two planned and announced projects.

In Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 2.35mtpa from five planned projects. The main capacity addition will be from INEOS Styrolution Ningbo ABS Plant 1, Jilin Petrochemical Company Jilin ABS Plant 4 and Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou ABS Plant, with a capacity of 0.60mtpa. These projects are expected to commence production of ABS in 2022, 2023 and 2025, respectively.

Global ABS

The Middle East follows next and for the newbuild projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.20mtpa from one planned project, Jam Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh ABS Plant. The project is expected to commence operation by 2022.
