Global polyethylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 134.1mtpa in 2022 to 193.5mtpa in 2027, registering total growth of 44.2%. Around 164 planned and announced plants are slated to come online, primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

Within Asia, China has 31 planned and announced polyethylene capacity additions, with a total capacity of about 10.14mtpa by 2027. The country is expected to spend a capital expenditure (capex) of $8.89bn. Major capacity additions will be from a planned project called Exxon Mobil Corporation Huizhou Polyethylene Plant, which is expected to come online by 2024 with a capacity of 0.5mtpa.

In the Middle East, the majority of the capacity additions are from Iran with capacity additions of about 9.42mtpa. The country is expected to spend a total of $12.7bn by 2027. The major capacity addition is from an announced project, Aria Oil and Gas Assaluyeh Polyethylene Plant, which is expected to come online by 2027 with a capacity of one mtpa.

RusGazDobycha, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd and China Petrochemical Corp will be the top three companies globally in terms of planned and announced capacity additions over the upcoming years.
