GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Alkylation Units Outlook to 2025 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Alkylation Units,’ says that the global alkylation units capacity increased from 2,406 thousand barrels per day (Mbpd) in 2015 to 2,553Mbpd in 2020 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 1.2%. It is expected to increase from 2,553Mbpd in 2020 to 2,748Mbpd in 2025 at an AAGR of 1.5%.

The US, China, Japan, India and South Korea are the major countries that accounted for 67.4% of the total global alkylation units capacity in 2020.

The US had the highest refinery alkylation unit capacity globally in 2020 with 1,276 mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery alkylation unit capacity were China, Japan, India, and South Korea with 131Mbpd, 112Mbpd, 105Mbpd, and 96Mbpd, respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2015-2020 with an AAGR of 28.1% among the key countries, followed by South Korea and India with 3.9% and 2.6%, respectively.

Globally, 48 countries have active refineries with alkylation units and a total refinery alkylation capacity of 2,553Mbpd in 2020. Jamnagar II (India), Texas City III (US), Paraguana (Venezuela), Baton Rouge (US) and St Charles (US) were the largest refineries in the world in terms of alkylation unit capacity in 2020.

By 2025, 29 refineries are expected to witness new build and expansion alkylation projects. Vadinar (India), Pulau Muara Besar (Brunei), Lagos I (Nigeria), and Panipat (India) are some of the refineries with the largest upcoming alkylation projects in the world during the outlook period 2021-2025.
