Since relocating to Wynyard Park in April 2006, Glamal Engineering has experienced a 60% increase in turnover and significantly expanded its workforce.

The company is the UK’s leading stockholder and supplier of carbon and stainless pipes, fittings and flanges to the oil and gas, petrochemical and water industries, and has operated in Teesside for 37 years now.

Its base at Wynyard is a remarkable 127,000ft² comprising a large warehouse that houses 3,000t of stock, offices for the various sales teams and administrative staff, as well as state-of-the-art meeting facilities. It is the space that has played a major role in the company’s recent success, as it has enabled them to double the amount of stock they hold. Increased stockholding means Glamal is able to offer immediate delivery and therefore provide a unique service.

With a turnover of £30 million in the last financial year, Glamal is forecasting £35 million in 2009. This figure will be bolstered by activities in its new office in Runcorn, which is expected to turnover £1.5 million this year.

If industrial activity in the north-east continues to grow, Glamal’s projected turnover could be boosted further, as it is supplying many more local contracts than it was twelve months ago. The recent boom in regional contracts for the company is a result of the appointment of large scale engineering projects in Teesside and further north, which rely on the skilled workforce and industrial expertise that the region is renowned for.

Neil Pentland, managing director, Glamal Engineering, says: “Relocating enabled us to take the business to a new level, as the site at Wynyard Park significantly enhanced our stockholding capabilities and provided sufficient space for further expansion in the future. Furthermore, it is a great environment to work in, as the whole park is fresh, well maintained and offers great facilities such as those at Wynyard House.”

He continues: “A key factor in the growth of the company has been the resurgence of industrial projects in the local area, such as Sea Dragon, Ensus and Sabic JV06. Over the last two years, we have dramatically increased levels of activity in the north-east and we predict that over the next two years, 65% of our business will be derived from local projects and companies.”

Previously located in Billingham, Glamal now employs 75 people at Wynyard Park and has five members of staff in Runcorn, which is a 38% increase in staff in 24 months. In addition to the secondary site in the north-west, the company has also acquired another storage facility in Teesside, which will again support plans for further business expansion.
