In evaluating seawater desalination plants, there are numerous decisions to be made in considering the pros and cons of various processes. Offshore marine installations often present interesting applications given the variety of processes available to consider. The evaluation process is very important considering the remote harsh environment and the requirement for a constant supply of water.
An example of such an application is an oil and gas platform constructed and installed in the Arabian Gulf
during the early 1980s. The platform required boiler feed water (<10ppm TDS) and potable quality water (<500ppm TDS) to be produced from Arabian Gulf seawater with a salinity of 43,500ppm TDS and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 35°C (65°F to 95°F).
