Arctic oil development dates back to 24 August 1920 when oil deposits were discovered on the Mackenzie River at Norman Wells, Northwest Territories. Over the past five decades, much technological advancement has been made to arctic and cold weather vessels and equipment. Such equipment was specifically designed to withstand snow, wind, and ice extremes and to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

Likewise, many international standards were developed to provide guidance to manufacturers and operators of such equipment.
