Chain hoist for pipelay system

Protea is well-known for delivering high-quality handling equipment, including cranes, winches and launch-and-recovery systems for the offshore and onshore energy industries.

With a range of proven standard products and a bespoke design capability, the company is continually developing unique handling solutions to meet the specific requirements of its global clients.

For example, in 2015, it delivered its first chain hoist based BOP handling system for the Falcon jack-up drilling rig being built at the Keppel FELS shipyard in Singapore. Protea has now adapted the chain hoist technology for an offshore pipelay application with the delivery of a chain hoist to be installed on a Vertical Lay System (VLS).

The 20mT SWL chain hoist system was recently delivered to Remacut in Italy for installation on a 150mT capacity VLS which will be used to lay various offshore products (including flexible pipeline, umbilical and power cables) ranging from 50mm to 600mm in diameter.

The chain hoist will be used for general handling operations in the worktable area and features a lifting height of 5m and max hoist travel speed of 2.5m/min. It is fully compliant with the DNV 2.22 Lifting Appliances standard.

Protea managing director Tomasz Paszkiewicz said: "We were very pleased to add Remacut to our growing customer base and look forward to working with them again in the future."
