The concept of the simple winch predates the fourth century BC; hoists, pulleys and winches were considered commonplace in the construction of Greek architecture. The core principle is unchanged, yet the carrying capacity and complexity of crane and deployment winch arrangements has increased beyond anything the ancient Greeks would recognise.
Precision subsea deployment has expanded to require safe working capacity in excess of 400t at water depths up to 4,000m. The additional demands on all the equipment, including the wire rope, are significant.
