16th December 2003 – Semco Maritime Engineering & Contracting in Esbjerg, Denmark, has entered into a contract with a large Egyptian rig operating company for upgrade of the drilling rig Kamose. Semco Maritime is to carry out a major rebuild and upgrade of the electrical generator and distribution system onboard the rig.
All diesel engines with accessory generators are to be replaced and at the same time the ventilation system and electrical distribution boards must be rebuilt. Semco Maritime will be the main contractor for this project and also carry out the rebuild on board with own personnel from the department in Esbjerg.
The contract has been entered into in keen competition with other, both international and local, engineering and contracting companies. The deciding factor was, however, that Semco Maritime has previously – very successfully – carried out projects of the same type in Egypt, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates and that Semco Maritime has offered to carry out the work while the rig remains offshore.
The fact that the rig does not have to be taken onshore for rebuilding is of great importance to the operator, who can put the rig back into operation sooner – and consequently save money.
For Semco Maritime the order means that we are successful in continuing our strategy of offering our customers rebuilding of rigs worldwide – based on our experience from projects we have carried out in the harbour of Esbjerg over the years, says General Sales Manager Hans-Peter Jørgensen, who participated in negotiations with the customer.
We expect that the contract, which is our second contract of this type in Egypt, will contribute to making our activities on rebuilding of drilling rigs visible to other international rig operators operating in the Middle Eastern market, where there is a large potential market for this kind of rebuilds.
Semco Maritimes engineering and contracting department was established in Esbjerg in the early 80s. Since the foundation the company has grown rapidly and now has departments in Norway, Great Britain, USA, and the Middle East. Further, we are represented by more than 30 agents worldwide. In Esbjerg 400 people are employed and in Semco Maritime A/S there are totally 850 employees.
